On October 14, 2021, social data research firm DataHaven presented recently-released 2020 U.S. census data on population changes in Greater New Haven, along with preliminary findings from their 2021 Community Wellbeing Survey and data from newly published reports on social and economic equity in Connecticut towns.
New Haven and Orange were the only towns in Greater New Haven to add population over the past decade, according to 2020 census data. Nearly one in six adults in Greater New Haven report knowing a close friend or family member who died from COVID-19. The data also shows fewer people are experiencing food insecurity, suggesting that subsidies offered during the pandemic made a difference. Significant disparities by race and income remain, however, and housing affordability is a continuing problem.
