In 2017, Jolyn Walker decided to take her annual giving activity a step further by establishing the Washington Walker Family Fund to support local organizations that she and her late husband, Judge, cared about. Her donor advised fund is named, in part, for her father, who taught his children about being community-minded.

Jolyn Washington Walker and Judge Herbert Walker were married for 22 inspired years before Judge passed away in June 2018 at the age of 90.

Contributions to the Washington Walker Fund are welcome and tax deductible to the full extent allowed by law.

Since Jolyn Walker started working at The Community Foundation in 2006, she has made a point to donate every year. In 2017, she decided to take it a step further by establishing the Washington Walker Family Fund to support local organizations that she and her late husband, Judge, cared about.

"I always thought that whenever I had enough money to help, I would start a fund," Jolyn explained. "Working at The Foundation has shown me the many ways one can participate in community by giving no matter how small or large."

The donor advised fund is named, in part, in honor of Jolyn's father.

"He taught my siblings and me the meaning of being civic and community-minded and that meant giving of three things: time, talent and money. He said 'money was important no matter how small because it demonstrated one's commitment to the cause'."

In Jolyn's case, her commitment is to New Haven and its surrounding communities. And, she says she is inspired by the knowledge that anything can be accomplished when we work collectively and care for one another and stand united by faith in ourselves and our community.

New Reach on Peck Street — In its short history, The Washington Walker Fund has supported local nonprofits such as Christian Community Action and New Reach (above) with help from donor contributions. These organizations were chosen for helping to meet basic needs and assisting single parents struggling to keep a roof over their head.

Jolyn's husband, also for whom the Fund is named, was a native of Jackson, Georgia who came to Connecticut after serving in the Armed Forces in Japan during WWII. He began his career as a respiratory therapist at Norwalk Hospital and served for 28 years as a Milford Firefighter. Judge Walker was a very spiritual man. For more than 50 years, he was an active, dedicated member of First Baptist Church in Milford where he inspired love and community as a Deacon. He was known for sharing words of wisdom in a cool, calm and collected manner. His favorite Bible verse was Micah 6:8: "He has shown you, O mortal, what is good. And what does the LORD require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God."
