New Haven, CT (April 14, 2017) – The Community Foundation for Greater New Haven (TCF), the region's charitable endowment and largest grantmaker, has created a new competitive grant process to benefit nonprofit animal shelters in Greater New Haven. Nonprofit shelters are eligible to apply year-round for up to $7,500 in funding from The Lillian and Henry A. Konopacke Fund.

The Community Foundation's commitment to animal welfare goes back to its 1928 founding charter, which included language that the charitable endowment would be used for the "alleviation . . . of the suffering of animals." Over many years, grants from TCF donors have been put toward this goal. In the past year, donor advised and preference funds have given more than $110,000 to area animal shelters and advocates. Shelters and animal rights groups in Greater New Haven help ensure that homeless animals receive humane care. Most rescued animals end up in municipal shelters, which list pets for adoption on petfinder.com. Animal Haven reports an adoption rate of above 80% and the New Haven shelter's rate is 75%. This compares to an adoption rate of 25% for dogs and 24% for cats among shelters nationally. The Konopacke Fund's intent is to assist nonprofit animal shelters in the Greater New Haven area in performing the services for which they have been established. Funding requests will be considered for those organizations that need support for projects and/or capacity building. Visit cfgnh.org/KonopackeGrant for more information about nonprofit animal shelter grants.

In addition to the year-round grant opportunities through the Konopacke Fund, a Konopacke Match Prize was offered for the first time during this year's Great Give, the region's annual 36-hour online-giving event that benefits local nonprofits. The Konpacke Fund provided a matching pool of up to $5,000 to inspire giving to participating nonprofit animal shelters; eligible organizations were eligible to receive a pro-rated match (up to $1:$1) for donations made on givegreater.org during the 36-hour period of The Great Give® 2017, which took place on May 2 - May 3, 2017.
