Devonne Canady started EIR Urban Youth Boxing, Inc in 2010. Since then her Gloves Not Guns program has been teaching children self-discipline and building strength and self-confidence. Canady, who won a Gold Medal at the first Women's Amateur World Boxing Championships in 2001, has simple expectations: respect your opponent, whether she is the person across the ring or one of life's many challenges. And, above all, respect yourself.

"People often dismiss boxing as a violent sport, but it can teach so many lessons on how to cope and navigate through life and build physical and mental stamina. Boxing can be a constructive outlet for urban youth, much more than playing video games or hanging out on the streets with friends."

For these reasons, the organization has received support from unrestricted funds at The Community Foundation.
