and New Haven Healthy Start Buddy.

New Haven Healthy Start

"Celebrating Black Champions for Health" series

Clara Nixon attended her first New Haven Healthy Start meeting in 2000. As a mother of three young boys, Clara was eager to participate in a meeting with her peers and where service providers were in attendance. Clara believes that "this is better than waiting on the telephone to speak to providers." In 2006, Clara suffered an infant loss. She became even more dedicated to the program and became an advocate in her residential and church community. Clara became a NHHS Baby Buddy and in this role, she used her position as a Crossing Guard for the Board of Education to spread the Healthy Start message to families and pregnant women taking their children to school. Consumer involvement is a hallmark of the Healthy Start programs and Clara's participation represents her community leadership and commitment. She is a graduate of the Parent Leadership Training Institute (PLTI) and recently returned to school to further her education. She believers in educating and informing her community and for these reasons she remains a #blackchampion4health.
