Join us in kicking off The Great Give 2022

On May 2, The Community Foundation held its annual meeting at the Carousel at Lighthouse Point Park. Gathering in person for a Foundation annual meeting for the first time since 2019, attendees were entertained by music from Mariachi Mexico Antiguo and rides on the historic carousel.

Board of Directors chair Flemming "Nick" Norcott Jr. welcomed attendees and introduced the theme of the evening with the question: Is our community meeting the moment? President and CEO Will Ginsberg followed, praising the togetherness of Greater New Haven during the past two years and providing an overview of The Foundation's work during 2021 and its strategic focus going forward.

What We Heard

• The Foundation distributed more than $35 million to local nonprofits in 2021, its highest level of discretionary spending ever, made possible by Stepping Forward, the three-year initiative to respond to COVID and advance racial equity.
• Fundamental change is beginning to take shape in Greater New Haven. Social sector organizations have a more diverse generation of leaders; the region's arts institutions and the city of New Haven are committed to cultural equity; and inclusive growth has begun to replace economic development as a strategic priority.
• The Foundation is in the middle of transformation with new programs, grantmaking and investments.
• The Foundation is centering racial equity across all of its work.

With The Great Give online fundraiser taking place two days following the annual meeting, Grantmaking and Nonprofit Support Director Jackie Downing encouraged attendees to support their local nonprofits.

"Without hesitation, our nonprofits provided services when our friends and neighbors couldn’t pay. They entertained us online at no charge when we couldn’t go into the theaters. They kept our kids learning and sharing when we couldn’t pay for them to go to community center programs. They provided for the basic need of food to people who found themselves food insecure for the first time and delivered to elderly who couldn’t gather in group settings for meals. The Great Give is our chance to step up and say thanks," said Downing.
