The Nina R. Horowitz and Richard A. Sussman Family Fund
Est. 2019 by Nina R. Horowitz and Richard A. Sussman as a preference fund to support health, early-child education and families
New Haven is home to Nina Horowitz and Richard Sussman. It is where they first met back in 1974, when Nina was an undergraduate at Yale College and Richard was working in his first job after college. It is where they returned as a young couple for Nina to complete her training to become a surgeon and Richard to attend graduate school. It is where their children were born and raised, and where they grew in their friendships and became involved in the community. New Haven is where they built their lives.
Upon reaching a point in life when they wanted to focus their attention and resources on the causes they care about, opening a preference fund at The Community Foundation for Greater New Haven only made sense.
“At the end of the day, if we’re going to try to improve life for residents in a place, what better place to do that than in the place where you have your own brick and mortar, where you’ve lived your lives, where there are people you care about and folks you interact with every day,” said Horowitz.
The fund created by Horowitz and Sussman reflects their passions. Horowitz, a surgeon, believes that healthcare is a right and plans to direct her philanthropy to improving access to care. Sussman is deeply committed to supporting early childhood and families. He recently retired after nearly three decades of running the Hartford Foundation for Public Giving’s Brighter Futures program, which runs neighborhood family centers.
“Besides the content areas, I also have a preference for innovation,” said Sussman. “I’m always interested in thinking about new approaches that may not have been tested but show great potential.”
