The Community Foundation Celebrates Black History

The Community Foundation for Greater New Haven celebrates Black History Month

Narrated by Hon. Flemming L. Norcott Jr., past chair of The Community Foundation Board of Directors

The impact of Black history cannot be understood in a single sentence, a single moment, or even a single month. It’s an everyday revelation of the excellence around us.

We know that everyday Black excellence lives inside mission-driven organizations and communities throughout all of Greater New Haven.

We see history being made in our communities as we embrace each other as neighbors — loving one another, challenging each other and growing together. Even through a global pandemic, we watch communities envelop each other with care and commitment to give and support at levels personally meaningful to them.

Black History Month is about the enduring recognition that the present is as important as the past. For us, it’s about adopting the highest standards of continuous improvement to ensure future generations of this community can reap the benefits of the work we support.

So how can we honor Black history?

By building an ever more connected, inclusive and equitable community — a community of opportunity and equity — every day of the year.

Black Futures Fund

The Black Futures Fund was created by The Community Foundation's Board of Directors to advance racial equity in Greater New Haven and to tackle the structures that contribute to racial disparities in our community.

One way you can make history is with a gift to Greater New Haven's Black Futures Fund, created to advance racial equity and tackle the structures that contribute to racial disparities in our community.

The events of 2020 underscored and revealed the depths of these challenges and the need for a sustained commitment to prioritizing racial equity.

The Black Futures Fund will support Black-led organizations and the promotion of Black leadership and grassroots advocacy, including emerging voices, ideas and collaborations on the front lines of challenging historical and cultural attitudes.
