Among the many ways The Community Foundation for Greater New Haven encourages resident leadership is its support of Community Gardens and Community Greenspaces in the city of New Haven.
These special places dot the landscape of New Haven and bring people together while beautifying and creating a healthier urban environment.
Community garden projects are designed to encourage food self-sufficiency, community building and empowerment, environment and neighborhood restoration and stewardship. Community greenspace projects work to improve the environmental quality and aesthetic appeal of New Haven, increase stronger community bonds and property values, and decrease vacancy and crime rates.
Both projects were historically funded and managed through a partnership between The Community Foundation, the City of New Haven's Department of Parks, Recreation and Trees, The Urban Resources Initiative, and the New Haven Land Trust (now Gather New Haven). The Community Foundation was and remains the largest single funder of New Haven's Community Gardens & Community Greenspaces and has invested more than $2 million since the program's inception in 1995.
